Projet en cours : « Mémoire et cognition en Chine »
Tout en regardant les mouvements de la Bourse de Shanghai sur son ordinateur, M. Tang, un chauffeur routier de Kaifeng, en Chine centrale, parcoure ses doigts avec le pouce pour décider quelle action acheter ou vendre. En Chine et à Taïwan, la main est utilisée de manière similaire dans divers contextes techniques et de la vie quotidienne : par des spécialistes de médecine traditionnelle pour apprendre et appliquer des connaissances médicales, par des devins pour calculer l’horoscope d’un client, par des prêtres taoïstes pour mémoriser et effectuer un rituel, par des marchands pour calculer et négocier les prix, par des scouts pour s’orienter de nuit, ou par des gens ordinaires pour prendre des décisions dans leur vie de tous les jours. A partir d’enquêtes ethnographiques comparatives menées sur plusieurs terrains en Chine et à Taïwan, ce projet vise à conceptualiser ces diverses pratiques comme une manière commune de modéliser la connaissance. Mon hypothèse est que ces techniques constituent un outil traditionnel de gestion des données par lesquelles les gens développent des compétences et des formes de sociabilité qui favorisent l’appropriation et la diffusion d’un certain type de connaissances. Ces différents types de savoir ont en commun d’être fondés sur la cosmologie chinoise ou bien d’être, comme elle, structurés sous forme de données. Ce projet pose ainsi la question du destin contemporain de la cosmologie chinoise comme productrice de sens et de structuration politique dans les sociétés chinoises.
