Eric Schluessel

Eric Schluessel is an assistant professor of history and international affairs at the George Washington University in Washington, DC, USA. He is a social historian of China and Central Asia whose research concerns Xinjiang (East Turkestan) in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and in particular ordinary people’s experiences of colonial dynamics that emerge at the edges of empire. Dr. Schluessel is the author of Land of Strangers: The Civilizing Project in Qing Central Asia (Columbia University Press, 2020), which received the 2021 John K. Fairbank Prize for East Asian History. He has also produced a textbook for reading Chaghatay Turkic (Maize Books, 2018) and a forthcoming translation of the Tārīkh-i Ḥamīdī of Mūsā Sayrāmī, the essential autochthonous chronicle of nineteenth-century Xinjiang. Dr. Schluessel’s work has been supported by a Mellon Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities. He holds a PhD in History and East Asian Languages from Harvard University, an MA in Central Eurasian Studies from Indiana University, and an MA in Linguistics from the School of Oriental and African Studies.
